4 Pillars To A Vibrant Midlife

It’s no secret that entering into the midlife season of your life is one of the biggest transitions you’ll ever go through. 

Sure, getting married, having children, starting a new job – those are all substantial transitions as well. But, at the end of the day, they’re each only one piece of life that changes at a time. 

Meanwhile, as you might be experiencing right now, entering midlife feels like EVERYTHING is changing, all at once. 

Your kids have moved out/gone to college. You’ve retired from work or plan to do so soon. The friends you had have moved away…or you just don’t connect with them anymore. The food you used to enjoy feels like it’s destroying you from the inside out. The workouts that you’ve done throughout your 20s, 30s, and even 40s simply don’t work anymore. 

And while you might not notice all of these things at one given moment, if you really looked closely, you’d agree that they all seem to be happening at once. 

Feels a little daunting, right?

The truth is, entering midlife as women can seem terrifying. Culture, media, and even others’ opinions based on their experiences can have us in a tizzy and wondering if our life is essentially “over”. 

We can find ourselves asking (even silently in our minds) – will I always feel this way?

With the right things in place, midlife really can be the BEST season of your life thus far. 

It doesn’t have to be empty, draining, or any of the other negative associations that we might have imagined up until now. In fact, it can be quite the opposite – fulfilling, purposeful, exciting, and genuinely joyful. And THIS, by the way, is what we deem as “success” in midlife. It’s not about what other people perceive or how your life “looks” from the outside. Success is simply your satisfaction and overall well-being in midlife. 

You can feel your best, look your best, and ENJOY your life through your 50s and beyond. It all comes down to making sure you have a few key pillars in place.

Well, in order to avoid the “cyclone” of midlife attacking your days ahead, there are 4 Key Pillars to keep in place. Simple in nature, these pillars are essentially just areas of your life that will keep the structure of your life strong, stable, and ready to endure any challenges that come with this new season. I’ve defined these topics based on my own personal experiences, and have helped hundreds of women embark on a beautiful transition into their midlife season. 

In today’s blog, I’ll share these 4 Pillars with you, along with a brief description of each. Then, over the next several months, we’ll unpack each of these topics in-depth, and I’ll give you real, actionable tips and insights for how to implement them in your midlife.

4 Pillars To A Vibrant Midlife

MINDSET 

Arguably the most important piece of thriving in any season of life (not just midlife), mindset is literally where everything else stems from. And let me tell you, it doesn’t have to be as “woo woo” as you might think. Mindset is defined as “the established set of attitudes held by someone” (thanks, Google). 

Simply put, mindset is how you’re thinking about yourself, your circumstances, others…literally everything! The way you think about your life will inevitably be what your life turns out to be. So, if you’re thinking that midlife is when “your life ends”, well, it’s not going to be a bountiful season for you. On the flip side, if you start thinking about your midlife as an opportunity to discover new things about yourself, make new friends, enjoy new activities, and feel your best, then that’s precisely what will happen! More on this topic next month!

WHAT YOU TAKE IN

Everything (and I mean everything) that you take in matters. The food you eat. The beverages you drink. The TV you watch. The books you read. The conversations you partake in. The advice you receive. Whether you think it’s affecting you or not, I promise it is. And there’s no better time to protect your mind/body/soul than during the midlife transition. Going back to what I mentioned earlier, culture and those around you will try their darndest to convince you that midlife is awful. That it’s “all downhill from here”. 

But by controlling what you allow IN, you can put your foot down and make your own decisions about what your midlife will be like. Kind of exciting, right!? 

Again, you can expect more on this topic soon, but as you begin to discover what this could look like in your life, take inventory of the books you’re reading, the shows you’re watching, the conversations you’re having, etc., and ask yourself – which of these things need to go? What can I start taking in that would add fuel to my positive midlife experience, rather than the opposite?

WHAT YOU OFFER THE WORLD

Alright, just as important as what we take in is what we put out into the world! Because I’ll be honest, while thriving in midlife is TOTALLY possible (trust me, I’m doing it right now!), it doesn’t come without commitment, effort, and oftentimes hard work. Success in midlife doesn’t just fall in your lap, but there are a handful of different areas that you can put effort into that will transform your experience in this season of life. 

I’m talking about things like exercise (probably not the same way you used to), trying new hobbies, putting yourself out there to make new friends and more. 

Yes, these things may push you out of your comfort zone, but trust me, friends, that is exactly where growth happens…and growth leads to fulfillment, joy, and purpose. 

SELF-CARE & STRESS MANAGEMENT 

The reality is, the second half of our lives is bound to present unique “challenges” like hormonal fluctuations, changes in family dynamics, and shifts in societal expectations. Not to mention the lack of energy, belly bloating, hot flashes, and insomnia! Sound familiar!? 

Alongside what you take in (described above), self-care and stress management are at the forefront of not just overcoming these inevitable obstacles, but truly thriving through them. Implementing practicable, achievable, and consistent self-care and stress management tools and techniques will empower you to embrace your midlife rather than fear it. 

And that’s what we all want, right?

To show up to our 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond with a noticeable radiance. To walk through our days with genuine energy and focus. To say “Hello, again” to a different (and dare I say, better) version of our youthful selves. 

Truth be told, there are a *bunch* of things that fall under each of the categories outlined above, which we’ll dive into over the next few months. But while that’s encouraging because it means the opportunities to thrive in your midlife are nearly endless, it’s also a lot to consider and “figure out” on your own.

Frankly, I don’t think we were meant to figure it out alone, much less live these impactful years of our lives without the strength of community with other women who are in the same season. 

With the right plan in place, you can experience abundance and joy in what you may have anticipated as a difficult season of life.
